Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 306 AM EST Mon Jan 24 2022 Valid Mon Jan 24 2022 - Wed Jan 26 2022 ...Periods of light to moderate snow spreading across the northern tier states... ...Low pressure system to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast today into Tuesday, reaching Florida Peninsula later on Tuesday... ...Moderating temperatures across much of the southern and eastern U.S. but mild afternoons over the Northern/Central Plains will be followed by arctic air intrusion Monday and Tuesday... The second in a series of fast-moving low pressure waves from Alberta Canada is tracking across the northern Plains early this Monday morning. This Alberta clipper will bring a quick round of light to moderate snow from the upper Midwest early this morning to the Great Lakes during the day today, and then through New England tonight into Tuesday. Up to a few inches of snow can be expected in these areas through tonight but higher amounts are possible downwind of the Great Lakes due to lake-effect enhancements through Tuesday. Southwesterly winds developing ahead of the clipper will moderate the arctic air mass that has already settled across the southern and eastern U.S. Floridians will wake up to a rather chilly morning today before a slow moderation trend sets in. Meanwhile, a closed upper-level low/trough tracking eastward into southern Texas is inducing a low pressure system to form just off the Texas coast. This system will tap into Gulf moisture and track quickly eastward, bringing a round of showers and some thunderstorms from west to east through the Gulf Coast today into Tuesday before reaching the Florida Peninsula later on Tuesday. The heaviest rainfall is forecast to stay just off the coast. Farther to the north, a shortwave impulse will dive down the spine of the Rockies today and Tuesday. This bit of energy will trigger snow showers from the Rockies into western Kansas with heavier snow likely over the higher elevations. Meanwhile, the northern and central Plains will remain quite warm today. However, the arctic front in the wake of the Alberta clipper will plunge into the Plains with much colder temperatures surging south tonight into Tuesday. Sub-zero readings will be common across the northern Plains Tuesday morning, spreading into the upper Midwest Wednesday morning, with even colder wind chill readings.
